New Releases From Critical Mass Games For Salute 2014, Part 3
Ygs Mecha.
They've been hinted at for years.
Now, they're here, and available for pre-order delivery at Salute 2014. The deadline is the 9th.
The Ygs, of course, are an intriguing set of alien mercenaries sculpted by the Mighty PF.
They look a bit different, at first, but they grow on you. They're sentient beings, and even though they're not human, you know they mean business. There's definitely potential there.
Craig and Dale commissioned me to take that potential to the next level. Mecha, and powered armour. The Ygs Ygaden mecha and the Astagar Volos mecha laid down the baseline of the equally-cool series of mecha that followed them.
The Ygs mecha proposal designs were wild and wacky, at first.
I was trying to convey squat, channeled power, all within a non-human body shape.
The mecha that didn't make the final cut were many, and actually comical to look at, especially compared the final sculpt that emerged.
The final version is drum-shaped and reverse-kneed, sure, but the design implies strength, not awkwardness. There are stylistic ties between the sculpted figs and the mecha they pilot. The weaponry is on par with anything else found in CMG's rich universe. I really like them, but of course, I'm biased.
I hope you enjoy them, too.
This variant is named the Guardsman. At least that's how it translates to the human tongue. From CMG's Forum...
"The Ygaden Assault Mecha "Guardsman" Variant comes with a power sword arm & pistol arm option, and a Shield Arm. Its back pack has both Mortar Bomb and Comms array options, it also has a separate Jump Pack back pack variant."
Yup. They can take Ravager jump packs. How awesome is that!
Again, from the CMG Forums...
"The Ygaden Assault Mecha "Gunman" Variant comes with two Pistol arms. Its back pack has twin Plasma blast Cannons."
Here, courtesy of Craig's Twitter Feed, you can see a pair of Guardsmen, one packing an energy pistol and heavy mortar bombs. The other Guardsman mecha must be a commander or close combat specialist.
Notice the power sword and jump pack!
Again, from Craig, the basecoated close-combat mecha. I can't wait to see the final product.
Here's a group shot of a couple Ygaden variants (oops, how did that Volos power claw sneak in there?), along with a Arc Fleet Walker Advance.
And here's a sneak peak at the next update of Salute 2014 releases: Ygs Powered Armour!
Best,
JBR
